Within American Kenpo Karate’s category of attack, “Pushes,” the front chest pushes have incorporated a strategy to anticipate the possibility of a push becoming a grab. This is evident by the idea that all chest pushes can quickly incorporate a pinning check. However, there are two exceptions to this rule. Repeating Mace and Parting Wings do not have the pinning strategy involved. The video clip below features these 2 Push attacks that become grabs–a one hand push that becomes a one hand grab and a two-hand push that becomes a two-hand grab. These techniques are examples of how to practice grafting from one category to another using pushes that turn into grabs.
“When identifying the NATURE OF THE ATTACK, you must first ascertain whether trouble is (1) eminent in the ENVIRONMENT you are entering then (2) anticipate the possibility of an encounter; and (3) eliminate the element of surprise. Although the type of action you encounter may surprise you, you would, nevertheless, be prepared to instinctively utilize your knowledge regardless of the predicament. Again, at this stage, strategy and plans for defense and offense are not thought of consciously–they occur naturally.
