Black Belt Set

Black Belt Set

What is a Set in Kenpo ? In short, a set is a choreographed and structured practice routine designed to index important information.

In American Kenpo Karate, there are 13 Sets, each of which has a particular focus.  These sets correspond to particular belt levels, and progress in difficulty and complexity. Today’s video features Black Belt Set.

In the book, The Kenpo Karate Compendium: The Forms and Sets of American Kenpo, Lee Wedlake asserts that the main idea of Black Belt Set is “to show how important range (distance) is and to give an arena for Kenpo practitioners to practice adjusting to different-size partners.  The focus of the set is on footwork.  It also shows some of the exotic basics applications you don’t see elswhere, such as inverted web and thumb strikes, vertical upward parries, etc” (p. 324)
