Orange Belt Technique Manual

OBSCURE WING (Left Shoulder Grab)

  1. With feet together and opponent’s left band grabbing your right shoulder, step to 3 o’clock with your right foot into a solid horse stance as you deliver a right back elbow to opponent’s solar plexus as you simultaneously pin opponent’s left band with your left hand.
  2. Deliver a right back hammerfist to opponent’s groin and follow up with a right band grab to opponent’s testicles.
  3. Immediately follow up with a right snapping obscure elbow to opponent’s chin, making sure your right arm follows the contour of opponent’s body.
  4. Cover out in the usual fashion.

LONE KIMONO  (Front Left Hand Lapel Grab)

  1. Standing naturally, step back with your left foot to 6 o’clock into a right neutral bow.  Simultaneously pin your opponent’s left hand to your chest your left hand as you deliver a right upward forearm strike against your opponent’s left elbow (slightly above the joint) causing it to break or sprain.
  2. Circle your right arm over and down with a diagonal inward-downward strike against your opponent’s left forearm. Finish with your right palm up with your left hand checking high. Make sure that your opponent’s left arm is driven down and diagonally to your left. (Angle of Cancellation).
  3. Your opponent is now coming down and toward 7 o’clock. Round the comer as you strike with a right snapping outward handsword to the right side of your opponent’s neck. Keep your left hand as a positional check.
  4. Right front crossover in reverse as you cover into a right neutral bow.

SHIELDING HAMMER (Front Hooking Left Punch)

  1. Standing naturally, step back with your left foot to 6 o’clock into a right neutral bow as you strike the inside of opponent’s left punch with a right extended outward block. Your left hand should be acting as a precautionary check at your chest.
  2. Immediately deliver a right inward back knuckle rake to the bridge of opponent’s nose. Your left hand should be guarding and checking.
  3. Shuffle forward while continuing the motion of your right hand as you execute a right dipping outward horizontal elbow to opponent’s solar Plexus. Your left hand should be checking high and may possibly strike to opponent’s eyes.
  4. Right front crossover in reverse as you cover into a right neutral bow.

THRUSTING SALUTE (Front Straight Right Snap Kick)

  1. While sanding naturally, as your opponent attacks you from the front with a right step through kick, step with your right foot to 4 o’clock into a left neutral bow as you block opponent’s kick with a left outside downward block. A double downward block may also be used for more blocking power.
  2. Execute a right step through front snap kick to your opponent’s groin. Both of your hands will be acting as positional checks as this move is executed.
  3. Plant your right foot towards 10 o’clock into a right neutral bow as you execute a right thrusting heel palm strike to opponent’s jaw. Gravitational Marriage is used with this action. Your left hand should be checking.
  4. Right front crossover in reverse as you cover into a right neutral bow.

FIVE SWORDS (Front Roundhouse Right Punch)

  1. While standing naturally, have your right foot step forward into a right neutral bow towards 11 o’clock, checking the inside of your opponent’s right knee with your right knee. In the process, execute a right inward block to the inside of your opponent’s upper right arm as your left hand blocks against opponent’s lower right arm with an extended outward block.
  2. Immediately strike to the right side of your opponent’s neck with a right outward handsword.
  3. Pivot into a right forward bow as you execute a left horizontal finger thrust or heel palm to your opponent’ eyes while your right hand cocks to your right hip, fist clenched and palm up.
  4. Having caused your opponent’s head to move away from you, pivot into a right neutral bow as you strike with a right uppercut punch to the solar plexus. In the process your left hand becomes a cocking check, guarding near your right biceps.
  5. With your opponent bent over, immediately have your left foot slide counter clockwise, to 4 o’clock, into a right forward bow as you execute a left outward handsword to the left side of your opponent’s neck. Your right hand acts as a check.
  6. Without hesitation, and while pivoting into a right neutral bow, have your left hand hook around the left side of your opponent’s neck, pulling his head down, followed by a right inward downward handsword to the back of opponent’s neck.
  7. Right front crossover in reverse as you cover into a right neutral bow.

RAINING CLAW (Front Uppercut Right Punch)

  1. Standing naturally, with your feet together, step back with your left foot into a right neutral bow and deliver a right inward, downward, diagonal block to the forearm of opponent’s uppercut punch.
  2. Immediately execute a left overhead heel palm claw to opponent’s face as you pivot into a right forward bow.
  3. Follow up with a right vertical back knuckle strike to opponent’s face as you pivot back to a right neutral bow. The path of the back knuckle travels over the left arm as it acts as a positional check. Shuffle forward with this action if needed.
  4. Cover out in the usual fashion.

BUCKLING BRANCH (Front Straight Left Kick)

  1. While standing naturally with both feet together, step with your right foot, to 4 o’clock into a left neutral bow as you simultaneously execute a left outside downward block against the outside of opponent’s left kick. A double block may be used if preferred for more blocking power. You will be facing your opponent from the rear after this move is completed. (Zone of Obscurity).
  2. Execute a right step through upward snapping ball kick to opponent’s groin. You should be checking with both hands as this move is executed.
  3. Plant your right foot towards 11o’clock into a right front twist stance. From the twist stance execute a left snapping side kick against the inside of opponent’s right leg. You should still be checking and guarding with both bands.
  4. Left front crossover in reverse as you cover into a left neutral bow.

SCRAPING HOOF (Full Nelson)

  1. While in a full nelson, circle both your arms inward and straight down your center line, thrusting down with your fists, as you straighten your knees, back and arch your neck so the back of your head strikes opponent’s nose.
  2. Bend your left knee to apply gravitational marriage as you execute a right hook kick to the inside of your opponent’ left knee. Continue with this motion as you follow through with a right knife edge kick that strikes and slides down opponent’s right chin stomping his right instep. (contouring move)
  3. Repeat this action using the left leg.
  4. Step with your right foot to 8 o’clock into a right reverse bow, to buckle opponent’s right leg, as your right hand heel palms to opponent’s groin.

OBSCURE SWORD (Flank Left Hand Shoulder Grab)

  1. With your feet together as your opponent grabs your right shoulder with his left hand, step forward to 12o’clock with your left foot into a left neutral bow. Cock your right hand to your heart palm up as you pin opponent’s band with your left hand.
  2. Pivot to 5 o’clock into a right forward bow as you deliver a right outward handsword to opponent’s throat.

GRIP OF DEATH (Left Flank Right Headlock)

  1. With your opponent applying a headlock from your left side, step with your right foot to 10 o’clock into a right close kneel stance, while turning your head to the left, and tucking your chin against your chest. Simultaneously deliver a right hammer fist to your opponent’s groin, and a left hammer fist to opponent’s left kidney.
  2. Circle your left arm over your opponent’s right shoulder, and have the fingers of your left hand press under opponent’s nose to fulcrum your opponent’s head back, using his shoulder as a fulcrum point. Other options at this point include grabbing the hair on the back of opponent’s head and pulling down. or covering his face with your left hand as you fulcrum, depending on the circumstances.
  3. Immediately pivot into a left forward bow, toward 6:30, using rotational force, while thrusting a right heel palm strike to opponent’s chin. Simultaneously execute a left sliding check down opponent’s right arm, ending at the elbow.
  4. Left front crossover in reverse as you cover into a left neutral bow.

SHORT FORM 1

THEME: RETREATING WITH A FRONT HAND BLOCK

  1. Start from a meditating horse stance facing 12:00.
  2. Drop your left foot back to 6:00, into a right neutral bow while simultaneously delivering a right inward block and a left back elbow strike.
  3. Drop your right foot back to 6:00, into a left neutral bow while simultaneously delivering a left inward block and a right back elbow strike.
  4. Turn to face your next imaginary opponent at 9:00. Step with your right foot to 3:00, into a left neutral bow, while simultaneously delivering a right inward block followed by left outward block and a right back elbow strike.
  5. Drop your left foot back to 3:00 into a right neutral bow while simultaneously delivering a left inward right outward block combination and a left back elbow strike.
  6. Turn to face your next imaginary opponent at 3:00, moving your right foot forward to “cover.” Settle into a left neutral bow while simultaneously delivering a right high inward block followed by a left upward block and right back elbow strike.
  7. Drop your left foot back to 9:00 into a right neutral bow while simultaneously delivering a left high inward block followed by a right upward block and left back elbow strike.
  8. Turn to face your next imaginary opponent at 6:00, drawing your foot up to a transitional cat stance, executing a left inward downward block palm up (active check). Step back with your left foot towards 12:00, into a right neutral bow, while simultaneously delivering a right outward downward block and left back elbow strike.
  9. Drop your right foot back to a 12:00, into a left neutral bow, while simultaneously delivering a right inward downward block palm up, followed by a left downward outward block palm down and right back elbow strike .
  10. Step clockwise with your left foot to 12:00, returning to a meditative horse stance, thus returning to point of origin.

Orange Belt Set Manual

STRIKING SET 1

The purpose of the set is to teach that if a punch is blocked, it can orbit around in a variety of ways and still result in an effective strike against your opponent. The set consists of a basic pattern of strikes done first to the front, then to the sides, and then with both hands. It can be done in either horse stance, or a bent knee attention stance (i.e., feet together}.

Set I:

(ALL PUNCHES ARE TO THE CHEST AREA)
  1. Right punch, followed by an outward back knuckle. Repeat on the left.
  2. Right punch, followed by a downward outward hammer fist to the front . Repeat on the left.
  3. Right punch, followed by a right inward over head inverted back knuckle strike.
  4. Repeat on the left.
  5. Right punch, followed by an inward horizontal hammer fist strike palm up (graft ing into chopping punches).
  6. Repeat on the left.

Set II:

Repeat Pattern 1, but with all punches to the side, and at shoulder level.

Set III:

Repeat Pattern 1, but with both fists striking simultaneously to the front.

Set IV:

Repeat Pattern 1, but with all punches to the side, and with both fists striking simultaneously.

Close:

  1. Bring the left foot to the right foot, keeping your knees bent.
  2. Both fists striking simultaneously to the front .
  3. Both hands execute outward back knuckles to the front.
  4. Both hands execute downward outward hammer fist strikes to the front.
  5. Both hands execute inward overhead looping inverted back knuckle strikes to the front.
  6. Both hands execute inward horizontal hammer fist strikes, palm up (grafting into chopping punches) to the front.
  7. Cross the hands, palms down, re-chamber at your hips executing double back elbows, while also straightening your knees.
  8. Step back out into a horse, and then close.
  9. For a little bit of diversity, try this set with an open hand – replace the punches w ith finger pokes, the hammer fists with chops, and the back knuckles with ridge hand strikes. It’s not a major change, but it introduces some really subtle differences without changing the basic pattern.
